Lighting accounts for 20 to 25 percent of the electricity used annually in the United States. For stores, offices and warehouses, lighting can comprise as much as 50 percent of electrical consumption. The Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPACT) mandated efficiency standards for many of the lighting industry's most popular lamp types. The new laws are aimed at reducing energy usage and energy costs. The new legislation makes it illegal to manufacture or import some of the most popular 8-foot T12 fluorescent lamps and R and PAR shaped incandescent reflector lamps. Between now and 2005 additional standards for energy efficiency may be mandated and strictly enforced. Many lamps now in widespread use throughout the USA will no longer be available.
